Daniels won't play for Wolves

The veteran will either be traded or offered a buyout

Newly acquired Antonio Daniels won't play for the Timberwolves after all.

As they also did this week with veteran center Mark Blount, the Wolves have given Daniels permission to find a trade that will allow him to play more elsewhere. If the Wolves can't trade Daniels, 34, for a contract similar to his $6.6 million deal, the two sides already have agreed to a contract buyout.

Daniels is hopeful of signing one more sizable contract and didn't think he would play enough behind young point guards Jonny Flynn and Ramon Sessions to do so. Wolves boss David Kahn obtained Daniels from New Orleans for Bobby Brown and Darius Songaila in a Sept. 9 trade that was all about ridding the team of the remaining two seasons on Songaila's contact.

• The Washington Wizards signed former Gophers standout Vincent Grier, who played in France last season. Grier was with the Miami Heat during the 2006 preseason but did not make the team and has never played in the NBA.

Anosike honored

Lynx center Nicky Anosike was named to the WNBA's all-defensive team Friday. Anosike, who averaged 7.4 rebounds, 2.7 steals and 0.9 blocked shots, is joined on the all-defensive team, selected by coaches, by Tamika Catchings and Tully Bevilaqua of Indiana and Lauren Jackson and Tanisha Wright of Seattle.

• Lauren Gibbemeyer had 14 kills to lead the Gophers to a 25-15, 25-16, 26-24 victory over visiting Wisconsin, in the Big Ten volleyball opener for both teams on Friday. Ariana Filho added seven kills for the No. 9 Gophers (10-3, 1-0 Big Ten). The Badgers fell to 5-6, 0-2 in the Big Ten.

• Alessandra Ferrazzi and Tijana Koprivica teamed up for a pair of victories on Friday and advanced to the main draw doubles final, leading the Gophers women's tennis team on the first day of the Gopher Invitational.

• Joe Stansberry of Bloomington won the Texas Senior Open on Friday at the Clubs of Kingwood in Kingwood, Texas. Stansberry shot a final-round 75, finishing with a 54-hole total 211. Perry Arthur of Plano, Texas, finished one stroke behind Stansberry, who shot 67 and 69 in the first two rounds.
