Lynch will be Wolves' radio analyst

Last update: September 27, 2008 - 12:35 AM

The Timberwolves have hired former Gophers basketball standout Kevin Lynch to replace Billy McKinney as their radio analyst, according to people with knowledge of the situation. McKinney left the Wolves in June to become director of scouting for the Milwaukee Bucks.

Lynch, who served as the radio analyst on Gophers men's basketball broadcasts since the 2001-02 season, will be paired with play-by-play announcer Alan Horton.

Lynch was a high school star at Bloomington Jefferson before joining the Gophers. The Charlotte Hornets made him a second-round pick in the 1991 NBA draft. Lynch also played professionally overseas before retiring.

The Wolves broadcasts this season will return to KFAN (1130 AM) after a two-season hiatus from the station. The decision to hire Lynch was made by the Wolves, who produce their own broadcasts.

Meanwhile, Learfield Communications, which produces the Gophers basketball broadcasts heard on WCCO (830 AM), will begin an immediate search for Lynch's successor. The move does not come as a surprise to Learfield officials, who knew Lynch has been in the mix for the Wolves job.
