Garnett — the first player McHale and Saunders ever drafted together — was the league MVP in 2004.

“I remember Kevin saying, ‘If we draft a high school kid and it doesn’t work out, we can say we didn’t know any better because it’s our first draft,’ ” Saunders said. “We both were pretty sure walking out of that workout that it was going to work out.”
