The bill Musselman Coaching tree

Assistant coaches Tom Thibodeau and Eric Musselman from the Timberwolves’ first two teams long ago went on to become NBA head coaches. So, too, did four players from those teams that played for Eric’s dad, Bill. Four other players on those teams have pursued coaching careers in the pros and college:

Scott Brooks

Former point guard has coached Oklahoma City to 50 or more victories three times, reached the NBA Finals once and this weekend coaches in his second All-Star Game.

Sam Mitchell

Free agent who signed his contract on Wolves GM Billy McKinney’s back at summer league in 1989 coached Toronto four-plus seasons and was named 2007 NBA Coach of the Year. He’s now a radio-TV analyst.

Tyrone Corbin

Now Utah’s head coach, he’s the only original Wolf now coaching who didn’t play for Bill Musselman in the CBA, but came to Minnesota from Phoenix in the 1989 expansion draft instead.

Sidney Lowe

Musselman favorite from the CBA coached the Wolves to a 33-102 record in nearly two seasons from 1992-94 and also coached Vancouver/Memphis. He’s now Corbin’s Jazz assistant.

Others

• Tony Campbell: Wolves first still is now A.D. and coaches at Brooklyn, N.Y., prep school.

• Scott Roth: Former Wisconsin star is longtime NBA assistant who has coached for Dallas, Vancouver/Memphis, Golden State, Toronto and in the D League.

• Tod Murphy: Brooks’ former teammate at Cal-Irvine now coaches Gordon College, a small college in Massachusetts.

• Doug West: Second-round pick from Wolves’ first 1989 draft, he has coached at his alma mater Villanova and in the D League.
