Wolves’ recent draft disasters

Derrick Williams (below)

Drafted: Second overall out of Arizona in 2011.

As a Wolf: It took the team two-plus seasons to decide the college standout plays the same position as star Kevin Love, a “stretch” power forward spot, after an experiment at small forward in Rick Adelman’s system failed.

Traded: On Tuesday to Sacramento for veteran Luc Mbah a Moute.

Since the trade: He ate breakfast Tuesday and flew west for a physical examination with his new team.

Wes Johnson

Drafted: Fourth overall out of Syracuse in 2010.

As a Wolf: Athletic shooter didn’t make many of them during two disappointing seasons, especially considering he was taken six slots before Indiana took Paul George 10th overall.

Traded: Sent to Phoenix with the team’s 2014 protected first-round pick so the Suns would take on Johnson’s contract and the Wolves could then sign free agent Andrei Kirilenko.

Since the trade: He’s starting at small forward for the Lakers on a minimum-scale contract after a ho-hum season with Phoenix last year.

Jonny Flynn

Drafted: Sixth overall out of Syracuse in 2009, one pick after the Wolves selected Ricky Rubio.

As a Wolf: Then-GM David Kahn was smitten by Flynn’s “charisma,” but a hip injury limited him to only 134 games played during two seasons with the franchise.

Traded: Packaged to Houston with the 20th overall pick and a second-rounder in a complicated series of 2011 draft-night moves that brought the team cash, now-gone Malcolm Lee and rookie Gorgui Dieng.

Since the trade: Signed with team in China this fall but was soon cut because of that hip injury.
