Telfair not given offer but is still in picture

Last update: June 27, 2008 - 10:05 PM

The Timberwolves have extended qualifying offers to restricted free agents Ryan Gomes, Craig Smith and Chris Richard but did not do so for Sebastian Telfair or Kirk Snyder.

By extending those offers, the Wolves reserve the right to match any offers Gomes, Smith or Richard receive when free-agent negotiations begin Tuesday. They did not offer Telfair a qualifier because they would have had to guarantee him a $3.5 million salary, but they remain hopeful they can re-sign him.

Randy Foye is the only point guard currently under contract now that the team traded away the draft rights to O.J. Mayo and Marko Jaric on Thursday night.

Vice president of basketball operations Kevin McHale said the team will look at other free-agent options if it cannot strike a deal with Telfair, a three-year pro.

Former Michigan State point guard Drew Neitzel, who was not drafted on Thursday, will play for the Wolves' summer league team in Las Vegas next month, and the team also is trying to get former Houston Rockets point guard John Lucas to play there with a team that will include Love and second-year players Richard and Corey Brewer. Former Winona State star Jonte Flowers also could be added.

Horry hopes to return

San Antonio Spurs forward Robert Horry told Houston television station KRIV that he doesn't want to retire and hopes to return for a 17th season. Horry, who will turn 38 in August, said the Spurs would be his top choice but that he also would be willing to play for the Rockets, where he played four seasons.
