Jerry Zgoda missed the entire Kevin Garnett era, but he's back covering the Timberwolves after working the beat for their first four seasons two decades ago. In between, he covered a bit of everything: Gopher men's and women's basketball and NCAA athletics, golf, outdoor recreation, sports media and a little Vikings and Twins.

Wolves win first Vegas summer game, 80-71 over Miami

The TImberwolves held a big lead this afternoon in Las Vegas after blowing a 24-point one yesterday.

This time, they beat Miami 80-71 one afternoon after losing to Phoenix on a last-second shot.

Former Illinois guard -- and Gopher beater -- Brandon Paul led the Wolves with 13 points off the bench on a day when Robbie Hummel scored just three points but continued to impress and show he just might deserve a long look at the 15th and final roster spot in October.

Gorgui Dieng reported feeling comfortable on the floor for the first time here at summer league: He found a little open jump within the offense and got a dunk even though he left the game briefly in the second quarter after getting hit in, well, you know where while trying to draw a charge.

Shabazz Muhammad continued to search to find the right spots to get his shots, going 3 for 10 for seven points but finishing with a three-pointer when he found space to get open and get his feet set. He also made a couple nice passes that summer-league coach David Adelman praised him for afterward.

The Wolves finished the first portion of summer league 1-2 and will play in the double elimination portion of the tournament starting Wednesday.
