Jerry Zgoda missed the entire Kevin Garnett era, but he's back covering the Timberwolves after working the beat for their first four seasons two decades ago. In between, he covered a bit of everything: Gopher men's and women's basketball and NCAA athletics, golf, outdoor recreation, sports media and a little Vikings and Twins.

Wolves waive injured Howard, Lee could be lost for season as well

Do you believe in curses?

Rick Adelman said no before tonight's big TNT game against Oklahoma City -- don't forget the early 6 pm start -- but he's starting to think it's him now that the team quite possibly has lost both Josh Howard and Malcolm Lee for the season.

The Wolves waived Howard tonight after they discovered this morning that his knee he injured Friday in New Orleans wasn't just hyperextended, but he had torn his ACL as well.

At age 32, that's probably the end of his career.

And there's a good chance Lee needs surgery -- possibly micro-fracture surgery, like Rashad McCants had many years ago -- and will be lost for the season.

The good news: Both Nikola Pekovic (back) and Dante Cunningham (knee) will play tonight against a 21-4 Thunder team that has only won 12 in a row.

So what do the Wolves do next?

Not a lot of choices:

Swingman James Anderson, just released today by San Antonio.

A D League player such as former NBAer Chris Douglas Roberts?

Michael Redd, who's had about a kajillion knee operations already himself?

Delonte West, who's more of a 1-2 than a 3-2 that the Wolves' need?

A trade, maybe for a guy like Raja Bell who's just sitting at home exiled from Utah?

Whatever they do, Adelman said they need to do something quick for a team that just keeps losing bodies rather than add them.
