Cassell bound for Boston

Former Los Angeles Clippers point guard Sam Cassell cleared waivers Monday night and was planning to fly to Boston today to sign with the Celtics, where he’ll be reunited with former Timberwolves teammate Kevin Garnett.

"We anticipate him being a member of the Celtics," team spokesman Jeff Twiss said. "He is not a member of the Celtics until he signs, which will not be until he gets into town sometime [today]."

Cassell, 38, was virtually begging to be let go by the Clippers, who owed him $6.1 million this season in the final year of his contract, and be signed by the Celtics. He got his wish Thursday, when Los Angeles bought out his contract and waived him.

Utah blows big lead, rallies

• UTAH 116, DALLAS 110: Deron Williams had 20 assists and 17 points, and Utah rallied for a 16-0 run late in the fourth quarter to beat the visiting Mavericks after the Jazz blew a huge lead. The Jazz took a 21-point lead shortly after forward Andrei Kirilenko was knocked out of the game with a hip injury on a flagrant foul by Dallas’ Dirk Nowitzki in the first quarter.

NEW ORLEANS 100, N.Y. KNICKS 88: Chris Paul scored 27 points and had a hand in three clutch baskets in the final minutes, leading the visiting Hornets to a victory over the Knicks.

• PHILADELPHIA 106, L.A. CLIPPERS 80: Andre Iguodala scored 18 points and Samuel Dalembert had 12 points and 12 rebounds, leading the 76ers past the host Clippers.

NOTES

• Houston center Yao Ming had surgery to repair a stress fracture in his left foot that will sideline him for the rest of the season. He will need about four months to recover before beginning a rehab program, team doctors said. Yao said he hopes to be able to play for the Chinese national team at the Olympics, which begin Aug. 8.

• Gilbert Arenas will return to practice today for the Washington Wizards, the latest step in his long recovery from knee surgery.
