Magic Johnson and Larry Bird took their friendship, their history together to Broadway on Wednesday night for the debut of "Magic/Bird," a theatrical production brought to New York City by the same team that did "Lombardi" about the legendary Green Bay Packers football coach.
The two rivals and pals appeared together on "Late Show with David Letterman" beforehand and then walked the red carpet along with NBA Commissioner David Stern and former Lakers coach Pat Riley before and after a debut that produced mixed reviews.
"Probably better than I even anticipated," said Johnson, who of course gave it a big thumbs-up. "We laughed. It was smart. It touched your emotions."
Said Bird: "That we're still doing things like this 20 years after we played basketball means somewhere along the line we touched some fans and some people and really made them aware of what we did as basketball players."
