SACRAMENTO, CALIF. - Timberwolves forward Michael Beasley called for his flip-flops after Sunday's 115-99 loss at Sacramento because he couldn't pull his work boot over his swollen big left toe without yelping in pain.

On an afternoon full of bad signs, that wasn't a good sign.

Beasley returned Sunday after missing two games because of that hurting toe he injured Monday in Phoenix. He played 26 minutes despite hopping in pain after he landed hard on his left foot on a drive to the basket early in the second quarter.

He scored 11 of his 13 points in the first half, when he shot 5-for-8. He shot 1-for-8 after halftime.

"It hurt," he said. "But I tried."

With two starters out already -- Ricky Rubio tweeted Sunday he was headed to Colorado for Wednesday's knee surgery, and Nikola Pekovic was a late scratch because of a troublesome ankle -- Beasley's toe is one more thing the Wolves didn't need.

"You can never tell right after the game because naturally your feet swell up anyway," he said when asked about the prospects of playing Monday night at Golden State. "I'll get some ice, get some treatment and see how it feels in the morning."

Welcome back

Wolves coach Rick Adelman returned to Sacramento, where he coached for eight seasons, and was pleased that the Kings, who once appeared headed for Anaheim or elsewhere for certain, will stay in the city.

"It'd be a shame if they lost this team," he said. "Coming into the building means something because we had some really good times here. It was a great eight years. There has been some really down times and they've had their issues, but if they get a new arena and they start winning some games, this is a great place."

Where in the world is ...?

Pekovic was scratched from the lineup an hour before tip because of a sore ankle that has bothered him off and on the past few weeks. He said the ankle began hurting him again late in Friday's game at Los Angeles.

Adelman started Darko Milicic at center, but Milicic played only 6 1/2 minutes before Adelman turned to little-used Anthony Randolph, who then started the second half in Milicic's place and played 20-plus minutes, his most playing time since Jan. 10.

Competitive nature

Beasley returned to action a couple of bills lighter after losing a wager to Wes Johnson over Saturday's Syracuse-Kansas State game.

"I don't know what he was thinking," said Johnson, who, of course, played at Syracuse. "I guess he was thinking Kansas State was going to beat Syracuse."

K-State product Beasley still wasn't sure what went wrong. "But it cost me some money," he said.

Etc.

• Point guard Luke Ridnour followed Friday's 11-assist, zero-turnover game with two assists and five turnovers vs. the Kings. Until then, he had delivered three double-doubles in four games. "I can't say enough about what Luke's done this year," Adelman said before the game. "He was an off guard and now he's a point guard. He just accepts his role. "

• Beasley scored a career-high 42 points in this same arena in November 2010. When asked before the game if he had another 42 in him, he replied, "I've got a lot of 42s left in me."

• The Kings scratched guard Tyreke Evans (sprained ankle) just before game time.
