Jerry Zgoda missed the entire Kevin Garnett era, but he's back covering the Timberwolves after working the beat for their first four seasons two decades ago. In between, he covered a bit of everything: Gopher men's and women's basketball and NCAA athletics, golf, outdoor recreation, sports media and a little Vikings and Twins.

Working full time on the half court

The Wolves had the chance for a full practice today, and coach Rick Adelman used just about all of it to work on the half-court offense.

Injures and the compressed preseason and season schedules made it hard to put in much in the way of offense. Indeed, Adelman had to back off from that early in the season with his team turning the ball over at an epic rate. Adelman simplified things and, with point guard Ricky Rubio, went almost exclusively with the pick and roll.

But now, a third of the way through the season, that has to change, Adelman said.

"We decided we were going to go out and work on the half court offense," Adelman said after practice. "We are not getting enough out of our half-court offense. We are not patient in it and we're relying too much on pick and rolls. We have to get baskets out of our half-court offense. So that's all we did today."

Adelman had everybody but Darko Milicic at his disposal, so it was a productive session. Milicic, who has been sick of late, got hit in thigh last night against Indianapolis and was unable to practice.

In other news:

--Adelman continues to discuss his starting lineup and the rotation with his coaches, but doesn't sound like he's about to change who starts games.

"What (players) were good last night in the first half?" he asked. "I mean, someone has to separate themselves to change things up. I mean, one game a guy does great and the next game he doesn't. I don't know, in my experience once you start making changes, and if it goes the other direction, then what do you do with that then?"

--It sounds like Adelman might be losing patience with Milicic. "He didn't practice again today, he had a sore leg," Adelman said of the big center. "Sooner or later either they play or they don't play. You have to go with the people you have who are healthy. He's been really up and down, and has had different injuries."

Adelman started Milicic against Indiana, but said Milicic got winded quickly.

--Adelman doesn't know why his team has been better on the road (5-4) than at home (5-8) this season. And he's given it a bit of thought. Part of it is the number of good teams that have come to Target Center so far this season. "but we've also lost to some teams that haven't been that good," Adelman said. "I don't know what it is. We tried to change shootarounds, do things. Somehow you gotta come in here and play as hard here as we do on the road. We haven't done that. Last night, (Indiana) came in and dominated us. Much more physical, and we were not physical at all."

--Anthony Tolliver has been one of the player whose minutes have fallen as the team got healthier. Thursday Adelman expressed confidence in Tolliver and pledged to find ways to play him more. Tolliver has been hampered by a sore right wrist, and said Thursday it was about 90 percent healthy.

--Malcolm Lee looked good while taking part in a full scrimmage today and should be off to the D-League for a rehab assignment next week.

--One final note: Kevin Love was asked about his beard, and why he was growing it out. He suggested he might shave it off should the team reach .500. Then he joked: "David Kahn doesn't like it, so I'll keep it,"

That's about it for now. Have a good day. Jerry will pick the team up tomorrow.
