Preview: Tipoff of this one got moved to 7 p.m. (Twin Cities time) to accommodate an ESPN cablecast, and you just know the network's honchos are rooting either for a Kobe Bryant points explosion or a dazzler like the Timberwolves and Lakers played on March 6 at Target Center, a 117-107 Wolves victory in double overtime.
Players to watch: Go ahead, just try to take your eyes off Bryant when Los Angeles has the ball. That apparently is what Portland did Friday night, when he lit the Blazers up for 65 points. Given the Lakers' seven-game losing streak when the night began, their scoring star felt something special was in order. "I had to come out aggressive and assert myself, just because our confidence was a little shaky," Bryant said. "We needed a breakout game. And it's my job as a leader to kind of read what we need as a team. And sometimes, me taking over games like this instills confidence in us all."
Numbers: The Wolves didn't have four guys total 65 points in their 106-86 loss at Golden State on Friday. ... The Lakers are 11-4 over the years when Bryant scores 50 points or more.
Injuries: Lakers forward Brian Cook (left ankle sprain) is out. Forward Luke Walton (right ankle sprain) was listed as probable against Portland but did not play. ... Guards Trenton Hassell (left ankle sprain) and Randy Foye (right ankle sprain) are available.
