(Updated again)

The Wild traded its fifth-round pick for San Jose Sharks right winger and fighter Brad Staubitz. He's had 20 fights in 82 NHL contests, including one on his first NHL shift against Anaheim's Nathan McIver. He's scored four goals and nine points with 186 penalty minutes.

Where's this leave Derek Boogaard? GM Chuck Fletcher says this doesn't preclude the Wild from re-signing Boogaard, but still, I've got my serious doubts. The Wild's made no secret it wants to go the team toughness route and become more of a "four-line team." Plus, as I've said on other blogs, Boogaard could make more money for more term in other places most likely, so is he going to settle for modest one-year deal just to stay in Minnesota?

I mean, I know he loves it in Minny, but I don't see it.

Added quote: On Boogey, Fletcher said, in reference if he's not re-signing Boogaard, "I haven't made that decision at all. This was simply an opportunity for us to get a gritty, competitive player that we think will add character and energy to our team."

Back to Staubitz, good straight-line skater, forechecker, character guy. And the dude can fight.

"He can play a regular shift and bring some grit and energy to our team. It's important component of successful teams. You want to have a balance. You obviously need skill, but we also feel we can upgrade our grit," said Fletcher.

Staubitz is a restricted free agent and Fletcher anticipates he'll work something out with agent Allan Walsh in the "near future." You can bet it'll be a one way because Fletcher said the Wild traded for him to be on the team next year.

Fletcher knew Staubitz from Anaheim. The Ducks brought him in to a training camp once, and of course, Wild coach Todd Richards coached Staubitz in San Jose as an assistant.

Updated quote: On the below fight, one of a few he's had with Nashville's Jordin Tootoo, Staubitz said, "I mean, you know Tootoo as a player. There's a lot of guys in the league that have had to go after him for the way he's run guys."

Staubitz was very excited by the trade, saying he'll be "working and working hard."
