Osgood notches first shutout

• DETROIT 2, BOSTON 0: Henrik Zetterberg and Tomas Holmstrom scored in the first period, then Chris Osgood, right, finished with his first shutout of the season to give the Red Wings a victory over the visiting Bruins. Osgood made 29 saves Tuesday night. He also got help from the posts behind him to prevent a goal in both the first and second periods for the 50th shutout of his career.

• PITTSBURGH 4, ANAHEIM 3: Pascal Dupuis scored the go-ahead goal with 10:47 to play, and the Penguins tied an NHL record with their seventh consecutive road victory to open the season. Michael Rupp, Kris Letang and former Gopher Alex Goligoski also scored for the Penguins. Corey Perry scored two goals for the Ducks, who have lost six of seven.

• VANCOUVER 4, N.Y. RANGERS 1: Rick Rypien scored the go-ahead goal 8:48 into the third period, the first of three late goals that lifted the host Canucks to a victory over the Rangers. Mikael Samuelsson scored his second of the game on a power play with 5:57 left and Henrik Sedin added an empty-netter with 1:24 to play for Vancouver. Christopher Higgins scored for New York at 6:24 into the third period.

• ATLANTA 5, MONTREAL 4: Colby Armstrong scored 13:14 into the third period and the Thrashers earned their first regulation victory in Montreal in more than five years. Tomas Plekanec had drawn the Canadiens even at 4-4 with his fourth goal at 12:40.

• TAMPA BAY 2, TORONTO 1 (OT): Ryan Malone scored at 2:21 of overtime, giving the Lightning a victory over the Maple Leafs. It was the Lightning's first road victory of the season.

NOTES

• First, Alex Ovechkin was day-to-day. Then he was week-to-week. Now the latest, courtesy coach Bruce Boudreau: "Hopefully it's no more than two weeks." The league's two-time reigning MVP has an "upper-body strain" that could test just how good the Capitals can be this season.
