Heating up in Calgary

The Flames' fire sale might just be beginning. Defenseman Jay Bouwmeester, who never has played in the playoffs and has another year left on his deal, is on the trading block, and goalie Miikka Kiprusoff could be too.

'First step of a journey'

Flames GM Jay Feaster said: "This is not why I came to Calgary, to be the guy that traded Jarome Iginla. It's unfortunate and a difficult part of the business, but it's time to move on to another chapter. This is the first step of a journey and a process."

Embarrassment of riches

The Penguins won their 14th in a row Thursday — one day after the Jarome Iginla trade — but Washington Capitals coach Adam Oates sarcastically surmised, "Maybe they are not happy with their lineup, deep down."

Congratulations?

Always the curmudgeon, here is New York Rangers coach John Tortorella on his 400th win: "You know what that is? It's being in this business too long, that's all that is!"

Avert your eyes

Phoenix's Paul Bissonnette (@biznasty2point0 on Twitter) asked Roberto Luongo (@strombone1 on Twitter) why there was a picture of Luongo watching an iPad on the bench during last Tuesday's dreadful Vancouver-Columbus game. Luongo wrote back, "If you were at this game you'd understand."

Columbus was so bad, Canucks goalie Cory Schneider told reporters after the 1-0 shootout victory, "I'm not sure anyone knew I was playing until the third period."

There, by the way, continues to be no trade in sight for Luongo.
