Continued: Russo's NHL Insider: If Ducks can't sign Perry, they should trade him

He will have to decide whether what he can get in return for Perry is worth more than a shot at a Stanley Cup. It’s hard to envy Murray. Every team’s wish every year is to win a Cup — not trade a former MVP.

But right now, this is the black cloud hanging over the Ducks — a cloud, though, that somehow has not become a distraction.

“I might worry about it if he leaves, but right now he’s on our team,” Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau said. “So I’m not really that worried where he is tomorrow right now.”

Tomorrow could be coming quickly though.

RUSSO'S SHORT TAKES

Parise not advising Perry
Zach Parise, who went through what Corey Perry went through last year (last year of deal), said he had no advice for the Ducks’ potential free agent.
“I don’t want to tamper,” Parise said, laughing. “It’s just such a hard thing. He’s got to do what he thinks is best and not listen to anybody else. It’s a hard call to make during the season. For me, the best thing to do was wait ‘til everything was done so you can really analyze it.
“When you’re able to get away from everything, that’s when you can really do some good thinking.”

Award voters only seeing one side
Jeff Carter, red-hot in Los Angeles, was named Third Star of the Week last Monday. Kings coach Darryl Sutter cracked, “It’s good they’re watching guys in the West once in a while.”
In all honesty, a big concern this season should be end-of-the-year award voting. Members of the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association are given the task to vote for most the awards, but it’s no easy task in a season where east writers are only seeing east teams and vice versa.
For instance, many writers in the East did midseason selections a week ago and nowhere did I see Ryan Suter or Jonas Brodin listed as Norris or Calder Trophy contenders.

Old dog, new trick
Vancouver’s Henrik Sedin is so bad in shootouts, he has only taken three in his career. Thursday he sealed a victory against Nashville with a penalty-shot goal. He joked that coach Alain Vigneault first begged the ref for a power play instead.
“Honestly, I didn’t think he was going to score,” goalie Roberto Luongo said. “I’ve never seen him score in practice.”

WILD'S WEEK AHEAD

Monday: at Vancouver, 9 p.m. (FSN+)
Wednesday: at Detroit, 6:30 p.m. (NBCSN)
Saturday: vs. San Jose, 1 p.m. (FSN)

Player to watch:
Brent Burns, San Jose
The former Wild defenseman has struggled defensively on a team that has struggled offensively. He is back to playing forward and already has scored twice.

VOICES

« The leadership and the poise that he has, … that sort of thing is contagious. »
Wild coach Mike Yeo on Ryan Suter
