Puck bounces right way for Devils

Last update: April 14, 2008 - 12:11 AM

John Madden’s goal 6 minutes, 1 second into overtime got the New Jersey Devils back into their first-round series against the New York Rangers with a 4-3 victory Sunday night in New York.

New Jersey beat the Rangers for only the second time in 11 games this season and will look to tie the series in Game 4 on Wednesday night.

Madden won a faceoff to the right of Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist into the corner and attempted a centering pass, which clipped a defenseman’s skate and caromed in.

"They kept charging, we knew there was no tomorrow, our best chances didn’t go in, so we got a lucky one that did," Madden said.

Sergei Brylin made it 1-0 in the first, and Patrik Elias and Zach Parise scored Devils power-play goals in the second.

"In the overtime, we weren’t thinking. We were just going," said Parise, who lost two teeth in Game 2 and had root canal work Saturday. "We wanted to get this win."

Rangers rookie Brandon Dubinsky scored his first two playoff goals, and Sean Avery scored for the third consecutive game. Devils goalie Martin Brodeur recorded his 95th playoff victory.

Boston 2, Montreal 1 (OT): Marc Savard came off the bench on a delayed penalty and scored 9:25 into overtime, giving the host Bruins a victory — their first in 11 tries against Montreal this season.

Tim Thomas made 27 saves for Boston, stopping several shots at close range in overtime. Carey Price stopped 29 shots for the Canadiens.

Milan Lucic gave Boston its first lead against Montreal this season when Savard dug the puck out from the boards on the side and passed it in front for some nice stickhandling and a shot past Price with 6½ minutes gone in the game.

The Canadiens tied it at 4:26 of the second when Tom Kostopoulos swept the puck past Thomas to make it 1-1.

"I knew at one point they were going to beat us," Canadiens coach Guy Carbonneau said. "We had a couple of really good chances in overtime, but Thomas played big."

Philadelphia 2, Washington 0: The Flyers’ Martin Biron made 24 saves for his third shutout in four games, leading a victory over the Capitals in Game 2 of their Eastern Conference first-round series.

Biron kicked Alex Ovechkin’s power-play wrist shot away in the first period, used the handle of his stick to deflect Alexander Semin’s breakaway attempt in the second, and sprawled on his back while corralling the puck with his left arm to thwart Dave Steckel in the third.

R.J. Umberger and Jeff Carter scored first-period goals for the Flyers, who limited Ovechkin to five shots.

Notes

• Phoenix signed Michigan forward Chad Kolarik, who was its seventh-round draft pick in 2004.
