NHL REALIGNMENT AT A GLANCE

The NHL's Board of Governors approved a massive realignment plan that will begin in the 2012-13 season, pending approval of the NHL Players' Association. The biggest change is the adoption of four conferences, which will be aligned as such:

CONFERENCE A

Anaheim Ducks

Calgary Flames

Colorado Avalanche

Edmonton Oilers

Los Angeles Kings

Phoenix Coyotes

San Jose Sharks

Vancouver Canucks

CONFERENCE B

Chicago Blackhawks

Columbus Blue Jackets

Dallas Stars

Detroit Red Wings

Minnesota Wild

Nashville Predators

St. Louis Blues

Winnipeg Jets

CONFERENCE C

Boston Bruins

Buffalo Sabres

Florida Panthers

Montreal Canadiens

Ottawa Senators

Tampa Bay Lightning

Toronto Maple Leafs

CONFERENCE D

Carolina Hurricanes

New Jersey Devils

New York Islanders

New York Rangers

Philadelphia Flyers

Pittsburgh Penguins

Washington Capitals

DETAILS OF THE DEAL

REGULAR SEASON

• Every team would play every other team outside its conference twice -- once home, once away.

• In the eight-team conferences, teams would play opponents within its conference either five or six times in a season on a rotating basis; three teams would play each other six times and four teams would play each other five times. The process would reverse each season.

• In the seven-team conferences, teams would play opponents within its conference six times, three home and three away.

PLAYOFFS

• The top four teams in each conference would qualify for the playoffs. The first-place team would play the fourth-place team; the second-place team would play the third-place team. The four conference champions (teams that won the first two rounds) would meet in the third round, with the survivors playing for the Stanley Cup.
