Michael Russo's short takes: Oct. 23

Fast start? Who cares?

After recent playoff failures, Washington coach Bruce Boudreau couldn't care less about the Capitals' 6-0 start.

"Quite frankly, when it comes to April and May, I'm not going to be able to sit here and say: 'Hey, we were [6]-0 and we got that record. Isn't that great?' " Boudreau said.

"It's not really going to hold a lot of weight. It's just the process of getting to where we want to get."

They're not 'Looooing'

Roberto Luongo has had a tough start in Vancouver. Instead of getting "Looooed" after every save against the Rangers, the maligned goalie got booed every time he touched the puck in the third period.

"I've got ears," Luongo said. "I mean, they're not happy with my play and I'm not happy with my play. I guess they're entitled. ... The good thing is that it's happened so many times that I've gotten used to it. It really doesn't affect me anymore.

"A fan pays their ticket, they come to the game and they have the right to boo if they want to."

Last week, Luongo finally got his new mask, and he showed his sense of humor, saying, "It's a couple weeks late, just like my game."

Ifs and buts were candy and nuts ...

Oilers fans have the right to boo Dany Heatley for refusing to go there after he requested out of Ottawa in 2009.

But one wonders if the jeering Edmonton fans during Thursday's Wild-Oilers game realize that if Heatley had gone there, the Oilers probably wouldn't have Taylor Hall and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins today.

Finishing last in the NHL two years running earned Edmonton those future stars.
