Personal: Wife Maryann; sons Zachary, 15, and Justin, 13.

Wild record: 77-71-16 (two seasons).

Other coaching experience: As an assistant in Milwaukee (AHL), the Admirals went to the Calder Cup finals twice, winning one championship. As head coach in Wilkes-Barre from 2006 to '08, Richards won 98 games and took the Baby Penguins to the Calder Cup finals in 2008. The Sharks won the President's Trophy in Richards' only year as an assistant.

As a player: Captain for the Gophers; scored 30 goals and 158 assists in four years; All-WCHA second team three years; second-round draft pick of Montreal Canadiens (1985); IHL defenseman of the year in 1994-95 for Las Vegas.
