Turnovers don't always tell the tale

In the XLV-year history of the Super Bowl, only six teams have won the big game while going through the regular season with negative turnover differential. The first was the Baltimore Colts (1970, minus-2). The last was the 2007 Giants (minus-9). In between: the Raiders (1976, minus-4), Steelers (1979, minus-10), Raiders (1983, minus-13) and Redskins (1987, minus-3).

Two of the eight teams left in this year's field -- New Orleans and Denver -- have negative turnover differentials. A ranking of the remaining teams based on turnover differential:

1 SAN FRANCISCO (13-3)

Turnover margin: Plus-28 (first in NFL) With positive differential: 12-2 With negative: 1-1 With even: 0-0

2 PACKERS (15-1)

Turnover margin: Plus-24 (second) With positive differential: 12-0 With negative: 0-0 With even: 3-1

3 PATRIOTS (13-3)

Turnover margin: Plus-17 (third) With positive differential: 10-1 With negative: 2-2 With even: 1-0

Comment Started season 5-3 with a zero differential. Finished 8-0 with a plus-17 differential.

4 TEXANS (11-6)

Turnover margin: Plus-7 (seventh) Playoffs: Plus 3 With positive differential: 7-2, including 1-0 playoffs

With negative: 2-2 With even: 2-2

Comment Overcame season-high four giveaways to win at Cincinnati with third-string QB in Week 13.

5 GIANTS (10-7)

Turnover margin: Plus -7 (seventh) Playoffs: Even With positive differential: 7-1 With negative: 0-5

With even: 3-1, including 1-0 playoffs

Comment Lost turnover battle three times during midseason four-game losing streak.

6 RAVENS (12-4)

Turnover margin: Plus-2 (11th) With positive differential: 7-0 With negative: 3-4 With even: 2-0

Comment Were plus-8 in sweeping two games from the Steelers to win the AFC North and a first-round bye.

7 SAINTS (14-3)

Turnover margin: Minus-3 (19th) Playoffs: Even With positive differential: 5-0 With negative: 5-3 With even: 4-0, including 1-0 playoffs

Comment Were 4-2 and minus-7 after six games, but are 9-0 with a plus-4 differential in their past nine games.

8 BRONCOS (9-8)

Turnover margin: Minus-12 (26th) Playoffs: Even With positive differential: 3-1 With negative: 2-6

With even: 4-1, including 1-0 playoffs.

Comment Went plus-4 during a six-game winning streak that turned things around under Tim Tebow.
