Vikings set to take on Oakland with weather in mind

An ominous sky over TCF Bank Stadium makes me think Grantland Rice should be writing the lead to this blog … tornado watch is in effect as the Vikings meet the Raiders tonight at 7.

The Vikings have mentioned in their pregame literature that fans will be directed to Williams, Mariucci or Ridder Arenas in case a storm disrupts the game. There will probably be a few folks watching the radar closely.

Anyway, on the game. The Vikings are 2-0 and the Raiders 1-0, so something has to give.

The Vikings’ focus offensively tonight will likely be on its offensive line, which lost right tackle Phil Loadholt (Achilles’ surgery) for the season. Rookie T.J. Clemmings will be the starter at right tackle on Saturday night at TCF Bank Stadium when the Vikings met the Raiders in a preseason game.

Rookies Tyrus Thompson and Austin Shepherd will also get a long look tonight on the offensive line.

The Vikings, who played in the Hall of Fame game, have an extra preseason game, which coach Mike Zimmer has lauded.

“I think it’s good for all of the young guys, because they’re going to continue to get some more playing time, another chance to evaluate and … we get a chance to tweak some things around and look at some guys with different people,” Zimmer said Thursday.

Although the Vikings can’t really afford another injury on the offensive line, Zimmer said, “We’re not going to get gun shy because something happens. We’re going to continue to work and obviously, we’re going to be smart about it. We have to get what we need to get accomplished for the season.”

During the regular season, team usually have seven offensive linemen active, so the two spares have to be versatile. That might be a key for players trying to make the team.

“We’re looking for starters and then we’re looking for backups, but … guys that can play both sides, so we can dress one less on game day.”

Do's and don'ts for preseason opener include plastic bags, purses

Because most of us can't remember ... what were we talking about?

Here is a reminder from the Vikings about he do's and don'ts for those attending Friday night's preseason opener at TCF Bank Stadium:

VIKINGS REMIND FANS NFL’S ENHANCED PUBLIC SAFETY POLICY WILL BE IN PLACE FOR SECOND SEASON BEGINNING WITH FIRST PRESEASON GAME THIS FRIDAY, AUGUST 8

Eden Prairie, MN (August 5, 2014) – With the Vikings first preseason game set for this Friday, August 8, the team is reminding fans of the NFL policy that limits the size and type of bags allowed in the stadium on game day.

The league-wide policy, which will be in place for the second straight season at all NFL stadiums, is designed to provide a safer environment for the public and significantly expedite fan entry on game day. The Vikings strongly encourage fans to not bring any type of bags, but fans will be able to carry the following style and size bag, package, or container at stadium plaza areas, stadium gates, or when approaching queue lines of fans awaiting entry into the stadium:

  • Bags that are clear plastic, vinyl or PVC and do not exceed 12” x 6” x 12.” (Official NFL team logo clear plastic tote bags are available through club merchandise outlets or at nflshop.com), or
  • One-gallon clear plastic freezer bag (Ziploc bag or similar).
  • Clutch bags no larger than 4.5” x 6.5”, with or without a handle or strap, may be carried into the stadium along with one of the clear bag options.
  • An exception will be made for medically necessary items after proper inspection at a gate designated for this purpose.

Prohibited items include, but are not limited to: purses larger than a clutch bag, coolers, briefcases, backpacks, fanny packs, cinch bags, luggage of any kind, seat cushions, computer bags and camera bags or any bag larger than the permissible size.
