New Orleans Saints safety Darren Sharper has never been one to bite his tongue, and the former Vikings safety provided more evidence late Friday night in response to news that Brett Favre had surgery on his injured left ankle.

Here is what Sharper wrote in a tweet: "Well y'all seen Brett had surgery on that ankle we got after in the championship game. Come Thursday night 1st game. X marks the spot."

He was referring to the rematch of the NFC Championship game when the teams open the season in prime time Sept. 9 in New Orleans.

Favre needed the surgery after taking a beating from the Saints in the NFC Championship game. The injury occurred on a high-low hit by defensive linemen Bobby McCray and Remi Ayodele.

McCray was not penalized for hitting Favre low, but the league later admitted the officials blew the call.

In all, the Saints were fined $25,000 for hits on Favre that night. McCray was fined $20,000 for two hits, including the one that injured him. Defensive end Anthony Hargrove also was fined $5,000 for unnecessary roughness when he lifted Favre off the ground and drove him to the turf as he threw an incomplete pass to Chester Taylor. Sharper had a second tweet Friday night that read: "I've seen him play on one leg, but not against the WHO DAT nation."

Gerhart profile: We wanted to tease a story coming Sunday. I recently spent some time with the family of rookie running back Toby Gerhart in California and will profile him in Sunday's paper. One thing: The story is print only until the middle of the week so you will have to buy the paper to read it. As I wrote on twitter, please don't shoot the messenger.
