Vikings rookie running back Toby Gerhart won't be at Winter Park for the start of voluntary Organized Team Activities next week and he said Thursday that it's unclear whether he will be at the mandatory minicamp June 11-13.
Gerhart is scheduled to graduate from Stanford on June 13. He said he is trying to figure out a way that might allow him to participate in the minicamp.
Gerhart, who was valedictorian of his high school class of 740 students, is on track to graduate from Stanford with a 3.25 grade-point average with a degree in Management Science and Engineering.
"We're trying to figure out how all that is going to work out," Gerhart said. "I don't know. We'll see. We're trying to figure out how to get around everything so I can make it to that."
"I'm just out here running and lifting on my own and trying to learn as much as I can without being there," he added.
Gerhart took part in the rookie camp a few weeks ago before returning to Stanford. He said he has part of the playbook and is being sent different installments. He said the rookie camp was a good opportunity to get his feet wet with the system, his new surroundings and get a taste of the practice tempo.
"The plays are pretty similar to what we ran at Stanford," he said. "I have some familiarity with the system. Practices were uptempo. You have to get used to playing fast for long periods of time. I was a little out of shape from just traveling around a lot [for pre-draft workouts] and not necessarily training. But overall it was good."
