INDIANAPOLIS -- Colt McCoy became the latest quarterback to decide that he won't throw at this week's NFL Scouting Combine. According to an ESPN report, McCoy was advised by Dr James Andrews not to throw.

McCoy injured his throwing arm early in Texas' loss to Alabama in the BCS championship game. McCoy is going to take part in all the other drills at the combine, according to ESPN. The plan is for McCoy to throw for NFL scouts on March 31 at his Pro Day.

It's been hard to get a good read on when McCoy might be drafted and projections on him have been all over the place. The Vikings, of course, could be looking to take a quarterback in April as they plan for the future.

Also skipping the throwing portion of the combine will be Sam Bradford, Jimmy Clausen, Tim Tebow and Dan LeFevour.

While the combine got underway today, the workouts don't begin until Saturday. Kickers, offensive linemen and tight ends will go through workouts on Saturday. Quarterbacks wide receivers and running backs will be on the field Sunday; linebackers and defensive linemen on Monday; and defensive backs on Tuesday. NFL Network will have coverage each day.

As far as our updates, there will be news conferences with executives and draft-eligible players starting on Thursday. We are expecting that reporters will get time with Vikings vice president of player personnel Rick Spielman on Thursday and coach Brad Childress on Friday.

A few other notes from today:

-- Running back Brian Westbrook, released this week by Philadelphia, said his agent already has received three or four calls from interested teams but did not identify the clubs. Westbrook continues to be linked to the Vikings in media speculation but this situation should start to clear itself up this week when the Vikings meet with the agent for running back Chester Taylor. Taylor is set to become an unrestricted free agent at 11:01 p.m. March 4 and the Vikings would like to retain his services. If Taylor does leave, then Westbrook becomes a possibility.

-- The Vikings will have another former player going into the Pro Football Hall of Fame this August when John Randle joins the select group at Canton, but Minnesota won't be playing in the annual Hall of Fame game. The NFL announced the Cowboys and Bengals will play in that game on Aug. 8. No one associated with the Vikings is going to mind not having to play that extra preseason game.

-- The Packers have designated nose tackle Ryan Pickett as their franchise player. The franchise number for defensive tackles is $7 million.
