YOUR GUIDE TO THE TWIN CITIES
When it was announced that Brett Favre would be the Vikings new starting quarterback this season, folks immediately began talking Super Bowl. As a die-hard Vikings fan, I would like nothing more. In fact, I live for the day that I can cheer the Vikings onto a win in the big game, but does the team have what it takes to go all the way this season? In my heart, I want to shout, "Of course they do!" but realistically, I don't think it's going to happen. Why? Because we lack consistency. We almost lost to the mediocre San Francisco 49ers, and we only beat Baltimore by 2 points. We lost to the Steelers and their record is only 6-4 so far. But the biggest wake up call was last week when we came off a bye week, supposedly well-rested and ready to kick some butt, and played against Detroit as if they were actually a contender. That game should have been a blow out.
Our statistics, while worth writing home about, won't stand up against teams like the Saints and the Colts. Our offense is rated 13th in passing yards and 9th in rushing yards. (In my football universe, it just seems wrong that we are only rated 9th when we have the best running back in the league, but that's another blog.) New Orleans is rated 6th and 5th respectively. And while Indianapolis is rated 29th in rushing yards, they are #1 in passing yards and their defense has scored more points than any other team in the NFL.
I know there are fans who will read this and consider it blasphemous that I actually put these thoughts in print (bad karma and all that), and in all honesty, nothing would make me more happy than to have the Vikings prove me wrong. In the meantime, let's wait and see how they do against Arizona and Cincinnati. Perhaps my last blog this season will read, "How Wrong Could I Have Been?!" but I doubt it.
