Antoine Winfield is not a lock to return Sunday from an injury to his right foot that sidelined him for the past three games but coach Brad Childress said that Pro Bowl cornerback did make strides in practice this week.
"I saw a lot of progress from Wednesday to Thursday," Childress said talking about the two most intense practices of the week. "A different approach Thursday from what I saw on Wednesday. He's going to make a push to Sunday. I'm not a 1,000 percent sure he's going to make it there but I know that he's still going to work. It's not like for us the hay is in the barn. Those guys treat on [and in] 48 hours it's amazing what you can do. He'll get out and move around before the game."
During the portion of practice today that was open to reporters, Benny Sapp was working with the first team at the left corner position. That could be an indication that even if Winfield does play Sunday against Seattle he won't start and will be more limited than usual. The Vikings have been very cautious with Winfield since he was injured on Oct. 18 against Baltimore in part because they don't want him re-injuring the foot.
Meanwhile, backup defensive end Jayme Mitchell missed practice today because of an illness. Defensive tackle Fred Evans sat out Wednesday because of the same issue but he has been back the past two games.
On another note, Vikings quarterback Brett Favre and running back Adrian Peterson were honored as the FedEx air and ground players of the week for their performances last Sunday against Detroit. Favre completed 20 of 29 passes for 344 yards and a touchdown in the Vikings' 27-10 victory. Peterson ran for 133 yards on 18 carries with two touchdowns.
Favre has won the award three times this season and Peterson has won it twice. The award is picked by fans.
