Favre's groin injury doesn't seem to be a concern

Vikings coach Brad Childress expressed no real concern today about the groin injury Brett Favre suffered last Wednesday in practice. Favre told Peter King of Sports Illustrated that the injury flared up during pregame warmups Sunday at Lambeau Field and at one point the quarterback informed backup Tarvaris Jackson and offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell  he had doubts about his ability to drop back.

Childress said he was standing right behind Favre when the veteran aggravated the problem. "It twinged a little bit on him," Childress said. "I think he's on the injury report as hip related and all that stuff, that lower chain, all kind of fits together. He was obviously able to practice through everything."

Favre, who was limited in practice all last week, is at Winter Park today lifting weights and doing exercises for his hip flexor, according to Childress. The fact he threw four touchdown passes in the Vikings' 38-26 victory over Green Bay made it tough to tell Favre was playing in pain.

With the Vikings sitting at 7-1 halfway through their schedule, the bye week comes at a perfect time. Not only for Favre but several players who will get time to rest up and let injuries start to heal. "Truth be known with 53 guys on this roster, I could go through with 45 of them and probably list some body part that feels worse than others," Childress said. "I just wanted to be transparent about what's going on there [by listing Favre on the injury report]. You guys know how transparent I like to be."

Vikings players had various activities to attend to today -- a team picture and NFL life skills seminar were on the schedule -- but will be off Tuesday through Sunday for the bye. The coaching staff will spend time breaking down the team's first half performance and focus on ways to improve in the second half.

Asked what he would tell his players before giving them time off, Childress said: “I just think it’s important that they’re mindful of what they’re doing. I give them the analogy the other day. As rainy as it was last week, I passed some people in a crash on the road I was traveling on, how fast a day changes, whether it’s the car being twisted up or your neck being hurt. I’m sure that’s the last thing somebody had on their mind going to work the other morning that was going to happen. Just to be mindful of where they’re at and what they’re doing. They may not have any intentions of getting hurt or what have you, whatever situations occur when guys fan out. I just think it bears talking about it, because if you’re a little more intentional about thinking about things, you realize what you’re doing a little bit more.”
