Waiting for the Wildcat

The Vikings used the Wildcat formation twice against the Houston Texans in the third preseason game but did not unveil it last week vs. the Cleveland Browns in the season opener.

They worked on the formation throughout training camp primarily with rookie Percy Harvin taking the direct snap. Coach Brad Childress was asked today about the thought process in deciding when to use it during the regular season.

"It's something we just played around with in the offseason, that's all" he said. "We're a lot better right now doing what we do most of the time and taking one more turn at that. That's kind of how we're looking at it."

Asked if he's hesitant to use because 39-year-old quarterback Brett Favre threw an illegal crackback block vs. the Texans, Childress said: "No, we've got that corrected [smiling]."

Of course, no one really expected Childress to reveal when he actually plans to run the Wildcat.

Same old, same old

Childress was asked today how much his offense has changed with Favre at quarterback. Childress said it's "absolutely" the same offense.

"It's exactly what he's familiar, what we've been doing from the beginning," Childress said. "Some different names, some things that we've tweaked in the last couple of years. But conceptually he's right with the concepts that he's seen."

Childress was then asked if Favre will have more input as he gets more comfortable with everything. Childress said Favre has "a lot of ideas over 16 years" in the system. He mentioned that former Bucs coach and Packers assistant Jon Gruden brought him game film of Favre from the 1992 season when Gruden visited Winter Park several weeks ago in preparation for the Vikings-Texans game on Monday Night Football.

"It's kind of fun to see him run Fox-2-X-Y-hook that was the same in '92 as it is in 2009," Childress said. "You have to think about how much he's seen going by. I don't know what I could liken to in your industry [media]. Maybe the power going off. Maybe having to wing it. Back in the days when you had to use shorthand. He comes from those days before there were electric appliances and things like that."

Injury report

Linebacker/special teams ace Heath Farwell is listed as questionable because of a hamstring injury. Guard Anthony Herrera (back) and tight end Jim Kleinsasser (hand) are probable. Linebacker Erin Henderson (calf) is out.

Peterson honored

Adrian Peterson won the FedEx Ground player of the week award after rushing for 180 yards and three TDs vs. the Browns.
