The Vikings have just announced a promotion for Rick Spielman, bumping him up from vice president of player personnel into a new post as the team's general manager.

Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier was scheduled to meet the media at 1 p.m. today for his end-of-year debriefing. Now Frazier will also be able to address the significant shift in the team's power structure.

Spielman is about to enter his 22nd season as an NFL executive having spent time in Detroit, Chicago, Miami and Minnesota. From this point forward, he will oversee all football-related activities for the Vikings while continuing to direct college and pro personnel programs.

Said Vikings owner Zygi Wilf in a statement: "This establishes the organizational structure that will lead to the long term success of the Vikings. Having watched Rick over the years, we have the utmost confidence that he will help us reach our ultimate goal of winning championships."

Added Mark Wilf, co-owner and team president: "Rick has proven to be a valuable member of the organization since joining the Vikings in 2006. With Rick's and Coach Frazier's leadership, the Vikings are well-positioned to win next season and beyond."
