Report: Vikings will see Newton next week

The Vikings raised a few eyebrows by not having a full contingent of team executives at Cam Newton's Pro Day earlier this month. At the time, Vikings vice president of player personnel Rick Spielman assured reporters the franchise had a plan in place to get a close look at all the top quarterbacks in this draft.

Turns out that the Vikings' close look at Newton will come on Wednesday when they put the Auburn quarterback through a private workout. ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Newton will workout for Miami on Sunday at Auburn, visit the Bills on Monday and then return to Auburn the next day to workout for the Vikings.

Vikings coach Leslie Frazier said this week at the NFL owners meetings that he would be hitting the road again this coming Monday and it would seem a certainty that he will be among the Minnesota brass getting a close look at Newton.

At this point, the expectation is that Newton will be long gone by the time the Vikings' 12th pick in next month's NFL draft arrives, but there is a chance the team could attempt to move up in the opening round.

Schefter, by the way, also reports the Bengals will visit with Newton at Auburn on April 3 and work him out the following day. Newton will then visit the Panthers on April 5, the Titans on April 6 and Cincinnati on April 12. His pre-draft visits will end with a trip to Cleveland on April 13, Washington on April 15 and Denver on April 18.

Carolina, of course, holds the No. 1 overall pick in the April 28-30 draft. Among the teams listed, here is how they draft: Miami is 15th, Buffalo is third, Cincinnati is fourth, Tennessee is eighth, Cleveland is sixth, Washington is 10th and Denver is second.

There is no mention that Newton will be in Minnesota for the Vikings "Top 30" dinner in early April at Winter Park.

We should clarify there is a difference between visits and workouts. A prospect can visit with a team at the team's facility (the lockout does not stop that from happening), but the workouts are not held at the team facilities.
