Rhett Bomar realized he had virtually no chance of getting much playing time after being drafted in the fifth round by the New York Giants in 2009.

Eli Manning is the Giants franchise quarterback so Bomar figured his only hope was to rise to their No. 2 quarterback someday. But after spending nearly two seasons on the Giants practice squad, Bomar has a new opportunity with the Vikings.

Bomar signed with the Vikings on Wednesday and will be their No. 3 quarterback Sunday against the Eagles if Brett Favre does not play because of a concussion.

"It's a totally different situation," Bomar said. "There's no doubt about that. Eli's going to be there forever and he's the franchise guy. So, of course, everybody wants to play, and so I'm just looking for an opportunity to get on the field and show what I can do."

Frazier said the Vikings were impressed with Bomar's arm strength.

"Very strong arm," Frazier said. "That jumps out at you right away. He has very good intellect and he really understands the passing game and the little time we spent with him yesterday and even this morning he's done a good job of grasping some of the concepts that we have on offense. We knew of his intelligence so to see how he's responded has been a boost for us. So we'll just see how much we can give him as the week goes on." Bomar entered Oklahoma the same year that Adrian Peterson did. However, Bomar was dismissed from school after his redshirt freshman season when it was discovered he violated NCAA rules by getting paid for work that he didn't do at a local car dealership. He transferred to Sam Houston State and became the school's all-time leading passer.

"I don't even think about that [Oklahoma] stuff anymore," he said. "I've kind of moved on. That was five years ago so I'm focused on the future now." Though the Vikings face a lot of uncertainty this offseason, including who their head coach will be, Bomar views this as a fresh start to his career.

"It's definitely a fresh start," he said. "A welcomed start. I'm happy, very excited to be here. It's just a better opportunity than what I was in." Injury report

Brett Favre (concussion), Adrian Peterson (knee), Tyrell Johnson (knee) and Madieu Williams (knee) did not practice Wednesday. Cornerback Frank Walker (hamstring) was limited while safety Jamarca Sanford (concussion) had full participation.
