The Vikings will decide either Sunday night or Monday whether to make a serious play for San Diego wide receiver Vincent Jackson, according to ESPN. The network cites team and league sources.

A Vikings source told ESPN that owner Zygi Wilf will be the final authority on a possible trade because Jackson wants a contract that will average $9.5 million per year and contain $30 million in guaranteed money. The report goes on to state that if the Vikings are willing to pay that amount, the Chargers are expected to ask for two draft picks, one of them at least a second-rounder for Jackson.

Jackson is holding out from the Chargers and also must sit out the first four games of the season under an agreement that was reached last week. If Jackson isn't traded by Wednesday, he will have to sit out the opening six games.

Honestly, it seems hard to believe the Vikings would be willing to give Jackson a multiyear deal given his off-the-field issues -- he is suspended for the first three games after being arrested for drunken driving -- and the fact the Vikings have several other players who will be free agents but haven't gotten extensions (Chad Greenway, Sidney Rice, Ben Leber are three).

Jackson is a restricted free agent and the best course for the Vikings would be to give him a one-year deal to replace Rice, who is out for at least the first half of the season because of a hip injury. As for the compensation that would go to the Chargers, that is a big question because San Diego has been asking for a lot for a guy who might be hard to retain if and when he does hit free agency.

The Vikings, however, have definite needs at wide receiver. Minnesota trails the Miami Dolphins 7-0 at halftime and Bernard Berrian has no receptions. Percy Harvin left the game in the second quarter after aggravating his hip injury and his return is questionable. The Vikings entered today's game with only four active receivers.
