Continued: Vikings sign CB Wright to practice squad

The Vikings did not make any moves Tuesday afternoon as the NFL's trading deadline passed, something that wasn't a surprise given the usual lack of activity around the league.

Rick Spielman, Vikings vice president of player personnel, indicated last spring it was unlikely the team would be making any significant trades this season when he voiced a desire to retain all of the Vikings' 2010 draft picks. The Vikings had five picks and no first-rounder in the seven-round draft in 2008 and five more in 2009. If the 6-0 Vikings were looking to make any moves, it's almost certain a team would have asked for picks in return.

The Vikings, however, were active Tuesday in signing cornerback DeAndre Wright (New Mexico) to their practice squad after having him in for a workout. Wright, a sixth-round pick of the New York Giants this year, spent time on New York's and Detroit's practice squads.

He was one of three "street" free-agent cornerbacks the Vikings brought in for a look, with an eye on adding depth for practice purposes. The Vikings are a bit thin at the position with veteran Antoine Winfield having suffered a sprained right foot Sunday and thus unlikely to practice as the team begins preparations for this weekend's game at Pittsburgh.

The Vikings also took a look at corners Mark Parson (Ohio) and Trae Williams (South Florida) on Tuesday. Parson wasn't drafted last April and went to training camp with Houston. Williams was drafted by Jacksonville in 2008 and ended up spending all of last season on Philadelphia's practice squad. The Eagles waived him in September.

The Vikings also worked out former Gophers wide receiver Logan Payne.

Going with the flow

Coach Brad Childress acknowledged he was trying to call a timeout just before Brett Favre's 1-yard touchdown pass to tight end Visanthe Shiancoe in the fourth quarter of a 33-31 victory against Baltimore because the Vikings were in the wrong formation.

Specifically, fullback Naufahu Tahi was lined up on the wrong side of the formation, which Favre immediately recognized.

"I knew by [Tahi's] look that he had no clue," Favre said. "He hadn't run that play. You just have to be able to adapt sometimes. I thought we did a good job at it. I thought this whole year we've done a good job of communicating and handling those situations because coaches typically don't like to call anything on Sundays that they haven't practiced. But as a player, especially if you have played as long as I have, I go, I know that we haven't practiced that -- and I am just talking about plays in general -- but I feel real confident with our guys that we can do things like that."

Childress said the officials didn't see him signaling for a timeout.

"It's hard to see when a guy has his back to you," he said. "Those guys can't sometimes see frontally, let alone in the rear. It's widely known. Yeah, Tahi jumped on the wrong side of the formation and the clock was running down so sometimes you just play football. Everybody else did the right thing and on that particular play he was a decoy. He did a nice job with his decoy responsibilities. Brett threw a nice touchdown pass to Visanthe where he was supposed to be."

Etc.

According to Elias Sports Bureau, Adrian Peterson's 143 yards rushing against the Ravens were the most against a Ray Lewis-led defense since 1998, when Chicago Bears running back James Allen rushed for 163 yards.
