The Vikings coach could get a new deal in the next few weeks, according to a report on cbssports.com.
Vikings coach Brad Childress could receive a contract extension within the next two to three weeks, according to a report by Clark Judge of CBS Sports' website.
Childress is in the fourth year of a five-year contract and talk of an extension does not come as a surprise, given the Vikings' 6-0 start. The Vikings also have won 13 of their past 15 regular-season games dating to last season, when they rebounded from a 1-3 start to win the NFC North.
Judge cites a source as saying an extension is so close that an announcement could come early next month, but another source said nothing is "imminent" at this point. Judge asked one of his sources if there was an obstacle that could sabotage a deal and was told no.
Childress and his agent, Bob LaMonte, declined to comment when asked about potential contracts talks last week. In an e-mail to the Star Tribune, Vikings owner Zygi Wilf said: "We appreciate and value how Brad has led this team on and off the field. We share the ultimate goal of creating a championship caliber organization and he has been integral to that process. We will have those discussions at the appropriate time."
Part of the reason why talk of a contract extension for Childress has heated up -- in addition to the Vikings' record -- is because LaMonte attended the Vikings' victory over Baltimore on Sunday at the Metrodome. However, LaMonte had planned that trip weeks back and while he certainly spoke to top Vikings officials while here, the trip was not set up as a last-minute negotiating session.
One thing to keep in mind is there isn't a huge rush to complete an extension because the relationship between Childress and owner Zygi Wilf is solid. No one is applying pressure at this point to get something completed by a set date.
