Coach not too worried about Harvin

Carlos Gonzalez, Star Tribune

Percy Harvin was hurt during a kickoff return in the fourth quarter.

Brad Childress said the receiver's shoulder is in the same condition it was last week.

Vikings coach Brad Childress didn't seem overly concerned about the condition of Percy Harvin's left shoulder, one day after the rookie wide receiver re-injured it in a 33-31 victory over the Baltimore Ravens.

Harvin left the Metrodome on Sunday with his arm in a sling after being injured on a fourth-quarter kickoff return. The first-round pick originally hurt the shoulder in the second quarter on Oct. 11 at St. Louis. He had been listed as questionable entering Sunday's game.

"No more so than last week at this time," Childress said when asked about his concern level regarding Harvin. "I just saw him as a matter of fact as I walked out the door there. He is sore; going through the treatment process. I asked him if they hit harder in this league than in the SEC. He said that the SEC hits harder."

Harvin, of course, played for the national champion Florida Gators and Childress admitted Harvin's answer was "tongue in cheek. I was trying to shame him into the right answer."

Harvin is certain to be limited or even held out of practice this week.

Meanwhile, running back Adrian Peterson appeared to be walking fine as he made his way through the locker room after twisting his left ankle awkwardly following a fourth-quarter catch. "He's just got overall body soreness," Childress said.

Clock management

Childress was second-guessed by some for not having Brett Favre throw the ball after the Vikings, down 31-30, got to the Baltimore 18-yard line with 2:51 left in the fourth quarter following a 58-yard completion to Sidney Rice. Peterson ran the ball three consecutive times, setting up a 31-yard field goal by Ryan Longwell that put the Vikings ahead by two points.

Childress said he wanted to get the Ravens to use their remaining timeouts, which they did after Peterson's first two running plays. Peterson's run on third-and-9 got the clock down to the 2-minute warning.

Asked if there was concern about throwing the ball in that situation, Childress said: "I mean, it's not the Woody Hayes philosophy. 'If you put the ball in the air and two out of three things that can happen are bad.' I don't believe that. Not with the guy that's playing quarterback, not with our receivers. That was an effort on my part to make sure that we ran them out of timeouts."

Waiting game

Quarterback John David Booty was back in the locker room after being re-signed to the practice squad Saturday. Booty was released Wednesday because the Vikings needed more depth in practice along the offensive line.

"That's just the way it goes being on the practice squad," Booty said. "They've got to get the guys in so we're able to even go through a practice, especially [with] lineman out."

Booty, a fifth-round pick last season, reiterated that he wants to stay with the Vikings.

"The first time I got released [at the end of training camp] I could have probably gone to other practice squads, but I think that this is where I wanted to be in the beginning," he said. "I really enjoy it here and I'm learning a lot right now so hopefully it'll be good for me in the long run."

Loadholt holds up

Rookie right tackle Phil Loadholt was questionable because of an ankle injury, but he said his ankle felt fine and gave him no problems.

"I've never had that problem before," he said. "They said they didn't know if I would be able to play or not. But I felt good throughout the whole game and the week."
