Gameday: Vikings at St. Louis

D. Ross Cameron, Contra Costa Times/MCT

Danny Amendola and the Rams have fumbled away a lot of opportunities this season. Will today be more of the same?

The Vikings will improve to 5-0 today, if they continue to be opportunistic against a Rams team that turns the ball over too often.

Last update: October 11, 2009 - 11:39 AM

Kickoff: Noon. TV: Ch. 9 (Chris Myers, Charles Davis). Radio: 1130-AM, 100.3 FM. Line: Vikings by 10.

Series: Vikings lead 22-16-2, with seven of those games coming in the playoffs. The Vikings are 5-2 in the postseason against the Rams, including victories in the 1974 and '76 NFC Championship Games.Last: Rams 41, Vikings 21(12/31/06 at the Metrodome).

Vikings in St. Louis: The Vikings are 1-3 in St. Louis since the Rams franchise moved from Los Angeles in 1995. Forecast: Indoors.

One man's prediction: Vikings 34, St. Louis 10 Coming off an emotional victory over the arch-rival Packers on Monday, the Vikings could be ripe for a letdown. Even if that happens, it shouldn't matter. The Rams (0-4) are among the NFL's worst teams; they are averaging an embarrassing six points and giving up 27 a game. The 49ers, who lost to the Vikings two weeks ago, routed St. Louis 35-0 last Sunday. Today, it should be the Vikings' turn to pile on the points.

Complete effort The Rams will be the third second-tier team the Vikings have faced this season on the road. The Vikings cruised to 14-point victories to open the season at Cleveland and Detroit, but it wasn't because they put together a full 60 minutes. The Vikings trailed the Browns 13-10 at halftime and were down 10-7 at the half to the Lions. Vikings players realize they have yet to put together a complete game, and with Baltimore and defending Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh next on the schedule, today would be a good time to start.

Shot at retribution The Vikings completed a very forgettable 6-10 season in 2006 -- their first under Brad Childress -- by getting run over by Steven Jackson and the Rams. Literally. Jackson had 142 rushing yards and a career-high four touchdowns in a 41-21 victory at the Metrodome. And that was against a run defense that gave up an NFL-low 61.6 yards per game. Vikings Pro Bowl tackles Kevin and Pat Williams likely haven't forgotten that game as they prepare to face Jackson, who is tied for fourth in the NFL with 367 rushing yards this season.

Stat that matters Want a big reason why the Vikings haven't lost a game and the Rams have yet to win one? The Vikings are tied for fourth in the NFL in take-away, give-away ratio at plus-5 (eight takeaways, three giveaways) and the Rams are tied for 26th at minus-4 (four take-aways, eight give-aways). The Vikings continued to be opportunistic on Monday as they got 14 points off two Packers turnovers. So far this season, the Vikings have scored 41 points off the eight turnovers by their opponents.

Possible encore? Vikings Pro Bowl defensive end Jared Allen had a night to remember Monday, recording a career-high 41/2 sacks against the Packers and making life miserable for Daryn Colledge before the backup left tackle left the game in the fourth quarter because of an injury. Allen could be in for another big day. Rams left tackle Alex Barron was benched in the first half last Sunday against the 49ers after being called for an illegal formation, and while he's expected to start this afternoon, if Barron is focusing on not making mistakes Allen is sure to take advantage.

The stat: 400 Victories in franchise history the Vikings will have if they can beat the Rams today. The Vikings are 399-322-9 since beginning play in Minnesota as an NFL expansion team in 1961.
