John David Booty's release from the Vikings was a short one.

The second-year quarterback from Southern California was signed to the eight-man practice squad Sunday, one day after he was waived as the team trimmed its roster to the regular-season limit of 53.

Booty was joined on the practice squad by safety Colt Anderson, offensive tackles Chris Clark and Drew Radovich, running back Ian Johnson, defensive tackle Tremaine Johnson, tight end Garrett Mills and wide receiver Nick Moore.

Booty was eligible for the practice squad because he was active for one only game as a rookie last season. He was waived after a shaky performance against the Dallas Cowboys in the preseason finale Friday.

Some speculated that Mills might get claimed by another team despite his injury history. When healthy, he has shown talent as a receiver. But he has appeared in only nine games in three seasons.

Radovich made the 53-man roster as a rookie in 2008 but was put on injured reserve after being inactive for the first six games.

Short stay

Undrafted rookie center Jon Cooper survived the final cuts Saturday, but his stay didn't last long. The Vikings waived Cooper on Sunday and signed another center, Kory Lichtensteiger, who was waived by the Denver Broncos a day earlier.

Lichtensteiger (6-3, 295 pounds) is a second-year player from Bowling Green. A fourth-round pick in 2008, he will likely serve as the No. 2 center behind John Sullivan.

It's unclear if the Vikings will try to add Cooper to their practice squad if he clears waivers.

Showing restraint

Ian Johnson had a vested interest in the outcome of Thursday's Boise State-Oregon game. Johnson was a star running back at Boise State, and was disappointed with what happened after his alma mater's 19-8 victory over Oregon.

Oregon running back LeGarrette Blount sucker-punched Boise State's Byron Hout in the jaw after a brief exchange on the field after the game. Blount then had to restrained from going after fans in the stands. He was suspended from the team for the rest of the season Friday.

"I think it's a shame that that takes away from the game because Boise State did come out and played a really good game," Johnson said. "Everyone has been giving me a hard time because my guys didn't fight back. But I know our team is taught, don't retaliate no matter what because the guy that retaliates gets it the worst. [Hout] took it on the chin and now look what happened to Blount. It's sad that had to happen but you can't be fighting."

Etc.

• The Lions claimed cornerback Marcus McCauley after the Vikings waived him Saturday, the Detroit News reported.
