Brett Favre's first extended playing time as a member of the Vikings proved costly for the quarterback. Literally.

The NFL fined Favre $10,000 on Friday for the crackback block he threw in the third quarter of the Vikings' preseason victory in Houston.

"On a run play, as his opponent was moving toward the ball carrier, Favre struck him below the waist area," the NFL said in a statement announcing the fine.

The play occurred when Favre was split out wide left as the Vikings lined up in their version of the wildcat offense. Percy Harvin, working from the shotgun, took the snap and ran toward Favre's side. The veteran quarterback threw the low block on Texans safety Eugene Wilson.

Favre's block resulted in a 15-yard penalty. Wilson had to leave the game but is believed to be OK.

Wilson's agent, James Sims, said the fine wasn't harsh enough.

"Absolutely not," Sims told FOX 26 Sports in Houston. "Certainly there have been similar blatant infractions like this where a player has received a one-game suspension, which would have cost Favre a whole lot more money."

Sims also told the television station that Wilson was looking to receive an apology from Favre.

"Eugene went back out on the field after the game hoping Favre would come up to him and apologize and express some concern, and that didn't happen," Sims said. "Eugene then was hoping Favre would send him an apology through some sort of correspondence, but that hasn't happened either. Eugene is still hopeful Favre will apologize to him."

Favre said after the game that he was not trying to injure Wilson.

A word of caution

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones sounded an interesting alarm when it comes to the Vikings stadium push before Friday night's game at the Metrodome. Jones said that revenue-sharing will be going away after the NFL's current collective bargaining agreement following the 2010 season.

"We're in the last year of our collective bargaining agreement next year, that's an uncapped year, and then you don't have it anymore right there," Jones said. "It goes away automatically right there. When the labor agreement is over, it will be over and when there's a new one in it won't be a part of it."

Teams such as the Cowboys, who moved into a $1.2 billion retractable-roof stadium in Arlington, Texas, this season, have played a large role in subsidizing the Vikings with supplemental-revenue sharing. The Vikings generate the least revenue in the NFL from their home stadium and thus are a major recipient of supplemental-revenue sharing.

Making his case

Darius Reynaud certainly didn't hurt his chances of making the team with a terrific effort on an 81-yard touchdown on a punt return in the second quarter. Reynaud fielded the punt near the Vikings sideline and broke three tackles almost immediately.

Reynaud's performance was important because the Vikings must decide whether to keep five or six wide receivers. Reynaud and Jaymar Johnson, who has been returning punts for most of the preseason, have been battling for that final job, and both might make it.

"I think I sealed the deal tonight," Reynaud said.

Etc.

• Linebacker Erin Henderson was taken the locker room on a cart after suffering a leg injury on a kickoff return. Coach Brad Childress said he didn't know the severity of the injury immediately after the game.

• Defensive end Brian Robison injured his back on a kickoff return late in the fourth quarter. Robison said he's not sure what happened but that he got hit in the back by several players. Robison said he thinks he will be ready to play in the season opener.
