Fantasy football advice from Chris Carr and Michael Rand that falls somewhere between fantasy and reality.
There are few things mentionable in a family newspaper more fun than throwing out a player's name on draft day and drawing both Whhaaaaa??s and Ohhhh!!s. The risky picks are the ones everyone remembers, and the ones that are talked about all season. Some of them will make you look smart, others will make you look like you spent the offseason "training" with Jeremy Shockey poolside in Vegas (first somewhat funny, somewhat inside joke of the season!). Instead of putting people to sleep with a Julius Jones or Ricky Williams pick in the middle rounds, grab Rashard Mendenhall instead. Maybe he flops, but maybe he's Pittsburgh's main back by Week 8 and spends the season's second half running people over. Draft day is always more fun after a few rolls of the dice. Today we throw out a few guys to reach for, and a few others to avoid. It was tough to keep all those good lookin' Packers off the Guys to Get list, but I somehow managed. What do you think Rand? You got Jermichael Finley on your list?
Michael Rand: Jermichael Finley? He plays for the Packers. If you are going to draft a sleeper, at least make it one that you can stomach. My preferred method is to grab a bunch of rookies at skill positions after I've already made safe starter picks at those positions. For instance, I like Michael Crabtree as a late-round grab. The guy can't hold out forever. Nobody holds out anymore. There's too much money at stake. He'll sign eventually, and he's too talented to sit. Another helpful tip: Look at last year's draft magazines and see which players have taken huge tumbles in the rankings this year -- perhaps just because of circumstance or minor injury. If you go back even further you can get some real steals. Why just this year I was able to grab Dan Fouts with my last pick. Smart, eh?
Chris Carr: Dan Fouts, he's No. 1 on my Greatest Sports Beards list. I like your thinking, as you can see with the Braylon Edwards suggestion. The dude had 16 TDs in 2007. Edwards, along with everyone else in a Browns uniform, had a forgettable year last year: 3 TDs, 873 yards. He's better than that, and so are the Browns. He won't get 16 TDs, but he'll have a heckuva lot more than three. One more top-secret sleeper name from the past to remember: Tom Brady. There's a rumor he was good a long time ago, but he threw for only 76 yards and zero TDs last year. I'm sure this unheralded old-timer is not on anyone else's radar, so I'm going to squirrel his name away until the final round and then -- Boom! -- shock everybody by drafting Mr. 76 Yards Passing. That'll work, right?
Rand: Good plan. If you went by 2008 production alone, Brady wouldn't even be drafted. Since we're talking about bounceback years, I like Sidney Rice. The guy has the tools and now he has a veteran QB. Speaking of that QB, nobody has elicited those Whhaaaaa??s and Ohhhh!!s in my drafts so far like the selection of Brett Favre. He's the ultimate sleeper -- partly because he could throw 30 TDs and partly because he probably wants a nap.
Carr: Brett Favre? But he's not in my "Unbeatable Expert Analysis Fantasy Draft Preview" magazine I bought at SuperAmerica last month! ... Yes, you knew we had to bring up Favre sooner or later. And you're right, he's boom or bust. Always has been. So what's your over/under on Favre TD passes?
Rand: Twenty-six to the Vikings, three to opponents. Zing! The 4 giveth, and the 4 taketh away. He could get off to a hot start, though. A sneaky early play? That's a story for another week.
