Vikings Pro Bowl defensive end Jared Allen missed his second full day of practice Wednesday because of a sprained right ankle, but the injury does not appear to be serious.
Allen watched practice from the sidelines and at one point was seen jogging across the field. Allen declined to discuss his injury, but he joked that head athletic trainer Eric Sugarman had a saw in his office when Allen walked in this morning.
Allen also apparently tried to pull a fast one on defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier.
"He pulls a practical joke on me and tells me he's out for six weeks," Frazier said. "Almost gives me a heart attack. But he's going to be fine. He's a big jokester."
It seems highly unlikely Allen will play against his former team, the Kansas City Chiefs, on Friday night at the Metrodome.
Quarterback Sage Rosenfels also appears doubtful after missing a fourth day of practice because of a right ankle injury. Rosenfels said he's able to jog and do some cutting, but he's not able to go full speed yet.
Wide receiver Bernard Berrian (hamstring), tight end Jim Kleinsasser (hand) and cornerback Marcus McCauley (undisclosed) did not practice.
Checking on FavreDuring Brett Favre's introductory news conference Tuesday, he mentioned that it wasn't only Sugarman and offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell who made trips to Hattiesburg, Miss. The Vikings also sent Frazier to visit with the quarterback in June.
The trip made sense in part because Frazier is from Mississippi and was going to visit family.
"[Brad Childress] thought it would be a good idea if Brett and I had a chance to talk," Frazier said. "I had a chance to sit down and talk with him about some things and try to explain to him from my perspective [and] what type of team we had. What I thought he would mean to our football team and what we could do for him as well, if he was indeed coming out of retirement."
Frazier got a chance to see Favre work out during his half-a-day visit. Frazier said, because he isn't an offensive coach, he tried to come with a "different slant on the whole process."
"One of my initial concerns, because I don't know him, was would he fit?" Frazier said. "That was part of why I went down there. Much like I talked with Gus Frerotte [who played for the Vikings in 2008] before we signed him. Would he fit our team, not just from a performance standpoint but in our locker room? Because in our business when you are trying to win a championship, chemistry matters also. And if you don't have the right chemistry, even though you may have tremendous talent, it can divide a football team. Once I left, I really felt he would fit our locker room and our team and be a positive rather than a negative."
Etc.• The Vikings' first three regular-season games are all slated for noon starts and will be televised by Fox. Despite Favre's presence, none of those game times will be moved. Fox has a national doubleheader in Week 1 -- the featured game will be Giants- Redskins -- but doesn't have the doubleheader in Weeks 2 or 3. Dan Bell, the vice president of communications for Fox Sports, said the network is looking to broaden the audience to which it sends Vikings games in those first three weeks.
• Favre's two-year, $25 million contract will pay him $12 million for this season. However, that money will be paid in three installments, according to ProFootballTalk.com. He will get $4 million during the course of this season, another $4 million in March 2010 and a third $4 million in 2011. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the contract also contains $6 million guaranteed for skill and injury, meaning if he plays poorly and the team releases him, Favre will get $6 million.
