Q&A with Chris Kluwe

2DAY'S 2 CENTS Interview with Vikings punter Chris Kluwe

Last update: June 13, 2009 - 9:08 PM

We thought we would take a brief break from Favre-a-palooza (Visanthe Shiancoe's term for Favre Watch '09) to give you a Q&A with punter Chris Kluwe, who plays bass in a band that is heading into a recording studio next weekend. Chip Scoggins caught up with Kluwe at the Vikings charity golf event Thursday, and he talked about his music career:

Q  So I heard your band is recording?

A  We are recording on June 20 and 21 at Pachyderm [Studio] in southern Minnesota. It's where Nirvana recorded and Mudvayne. They're a recent rock band. They recorded there. They've had a bunch of other bands record there.

Q  What is your band's name?

A  We still haven't decided on a name yet. Me and the guitarist really like "Warbear" but the drummer and singer really don't like it, so we've asked them to come up with a name that we can all agree on. So far we haven't really found anything.

Q  What kind of music is it?

A  Kind of like alternative rock. Something you would hear on 93X.

Q  What instrument do you play?

A  Bass.

Q  How often does the band practice?

A  We try to three times a week if we can. Just to make sure we're all clicking on the same page.

Q  Have you played any gigs?

Not yet. We have I think 10 songs right now, but we're still coming up with lyrics for them. We have the instrumentals for 10. Pretty much me and the guitarist write most of the riffs, the musical part. But everyone contributes.

Q  Have you played bass most of your life?

Not really. I played violin for about eight years growing up. Then I had to stop playing because in high school, it's either athletics or music after school. After I played Guitar Hero for a couple of years I said, "You know, I should really learn how to play the real guitar." I decided to pick up the guitar and learn how to play.

Q  Do you play guitar and bass?

I'm better at bass because it's similar to the violin in that you're mainly on one string at a time. Guitar, I'm still working at it. Single-note stuff I can do pretty well. Chords, I'm struggling with.

Q  Where does the band practice?

It's called Taylor Sound in downtown Minneapolis. It's like a warehouse with probably 20 or 30 practice spaces inside. Each one is a room with sound-proofing. There's a lot of different bands there, so it's pretty cool.

Q  How many songs are you hoping to record?

We're hoping to get three songs recorded, CD quality, when we go down next weekend. Hopefully get them on 93X, maybe the Vikings website and get some exposure. Then once we have seven or eight songs ready, start playing [gigs].
