Assistant general manager George Paton is scheduled to interview on Friday with the 49ers about their GM opening, a source confirmed.

Paton has spent the past decade with the Vikings, recently helping them assemble the talented, young core that won the NFC North in 2015.

The duties of Paton, who worked with general manager Rick Spielman in Chicago and Miami before joining him in Minnesota in 2006, include helping Spielman sort through free agency and stack the team's draft board.

Paton has turned down opportunities to interview for possible promotions with other teams in recent years because of his close relationship with Spielman and belief that the Vikings were building something special.

The 49ers on Monday fired general manager Trent Baalke and coach Chip Kelly after a 2-14 season. They hold the No. 2 pick in April's draft.

According to reports, the 49ers also plan to interview for their opening Eliot Wolf and Brian Guteknust of the Packers, Trent Kirchner and Scott Fitterer of the Seahawks and ESPN analyst Louis Riddick. They have also reportedly requested to chat with New England's Nick Caserio.

USA Today first reported that Paton would interview with the 49ers.
