Steelers vs. Cardinals: An overview

Brief history

Steelers Formed in 1933, were an old-guard NFL franchise that switched to the AFC in the 1970 merger.

Cardinals Formed in 1898 at a Chicago athletic club, they are the oldest pro football team in America.

Geography

Steelers Have never moved but merged with Eagles in 1943 and Cardinals in 1944 because of WWII player shortages.

Cardinals Were in Chicago until 1959, in St. Louis from 1960 to 1987 and in Arizona since then.

NFL titles

Steelers Five Super Bowl victories (IX, X, XIII, XIV, XL) in six tries. Lost Super Bowl XXX to Dallas.

Cardinals Two NFL championships, in 1925 and 1947. No Super Bowl appearances until this season.

Struggles

Steelers Made the playoffs only once from 1933 to 1971. Since then, they have the league's best record.

Cardinals Until this season, qualified for the playoffs only five times and won only two playoff games since 1947.

Owners

Steelers The late Art Rooney founded the team. His son Dan is now principal owner and widely respected around the league.

Cardinals Since 1932, the Bidwills have run the team, stumbling along the way. Bill Bidwill is sole owner; his son Mike is team president.

Coaching history

Steelers Have had three coaches (Chuck Noll, Bill Cowher and Mike Tomlin) since 1969.


Cardinals Have had 14 coaches since 1969. Their winningest coach is Don Coryell (42 victories).

War hero

Steelers 1970s running back Rocky Bleier won a Purple Heart in Vietnam.

Cardinals Hard-hitting safety Pat Tillman was killed 2004 as an Army Ranger in Afghanistan.

Best player ever

Steelers Terry Bradshaw is the only quarterback to win four Super Bowls. Enough said.

Cardinals Hall of Famer Larry Wilson invented the safety blitz and once played with two broken wrists.

Season's keys

Steelers The Steelers led the NFL in total defense and passing defense, and were second in rushing defense.

Cardinals The Cardinals won the NFC West at 9-7 but upset the Falcons, Panthers and Eagles in the playoffs.
