Ex-Vikings trio reach final 15 in Hall voting

Last update: January 7, 2009 - 12:14 AM

Ex-Vikings John Randle, Randall McDaniel and Cris Carter are among 15 finalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.

Career sacks leader Bruce Smith, along with Rod Woodson, Shannon Sharpe and Randle are the only first-year eligible players to make the final round this year. Joining them will be two contributors: former commissioner Paul Tagliabue and Buffalo Bills owner Ralph Wilson, as well as two senior nominees selected last August by the Senior Committee, former Atlanta defensive end Claude Humphrey and former Dallas wide receiver Bob Hayes.

Between four and seven candidates will be elected in the balloting that will take place in Tampa on Jan. 31, the day before the Super Bowl. The field was narrowed by the Hall's 44-member board of selectors from 133 to 25 before reducing it to the final 15.

Of the other finalists, only former Pittsburgh center Dermontti Dawson and former Seattle defensive lineman Cortez Kennedy, have not been finalists before.

The rest: receivers Carter and Andre Reed; defensive end Richard Dent; guards Russ Grimm, Bob Kuechenberg and McDaniel; and linebacker Derrick Thomas.

Smith played from 1985-1999 with Buffalo, then spent four years in Washington. He finished with 200 sacks, the most since they became an official statistic in 1982.

Woodson, who played cornerback and safety from 1987-2003 with Pittsburgh, Baltimore and Oakland -- and also played some offense -- had 72 interceptions. Randle had 137 sacks from defensive tackle for the Vikings and Seattle from 1990-2003.

• The Titans got Pro Bowl defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth (left knee sprain) and end Kyle Vanden Bosch (groin) back on the practice field in preparation for their Saturday game against the Colts, but Baltimore Pro Bowl center Kevin Mawae (right elbow) said he was questionable to play.

• Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer won't need surgery on his right elbow to repair ligament and tendon damage and should be ready for the team's regular offseason workouts.

• The Bears fired linebackers coach and former Bloomington Jefferson star Lloyd Lee, the latest move after the team finished 9-7 and missed the playoffs for the second consecutive year.

• Carl Peterson gave a long farewell to the Chiefs on Tuesday, after stepping down last month from a 20-year stint as president, general manager and chief executive, and said talk of his joining the Dolphins is "pure speculation."

• The Broncos spoke with Denver offensive coordinator Rick Dennison and Cowboys offensive coordinator Jason Garrett about their head coaching position.

• The Jets formally met with their offensive coordinator, Brian Schottenheimer, and Boston College coach Jeff Jagodzinski about the team's head coaching vacancy.
