Mark Craig's Tuesday morning QB

Last update: December 30, 2008 - 8:11 AM

Who's next to fall?

The Lions, Browns and Jets moved swiftly to fire their coaches, while the 49ers moved just as quickly to reward their coach, Mike Singletary, with a four-year contract. Are those the only coaching moves that will be made between now and next season? Probably not. Herm Edwards (Chiefs), Tom Cable (Raiders) and Jim Haslett (Rams) shouldn't feel too comfortable. Other front-runners for early hot-seat consideration in 2009 are Jack Del Rio (Jaguars), Dick Jauron (Bills), Jim Zorn (Redskins), Marvin Lewis (Bengals) and Wade Phillips (Cowboys), assuming Dallas owner Jerry Jones is telling the truth and won't fire Phillips before next season. Throw Eagles coach Andy Reid on that list if his team gets smoked at the Metrodome on Sunday. Much to the dismay of some Vikings fans, Brad Childress appears to have bought himself breathing room with the team's first division title since 2000.

Anybody else thinking this?

The Giants are the best team in the league. The Colts are the hottest team in the league. Anybody else besides Archie getting that Manning vs. Manning Super Bowl feeling?

How's this for a Kick-A offense?

The Browns ended the Romeo Era by failing to score an offensive touchdown in an NFL-record 24 consecutive quarters. The previous mark was 22 quarters by the 1974 Bears. The NFL had three shutouts on Sunday. It had only three during the first 16 weeks of the season.

Can the Lions keep it going?

Now that the Lions have become the first team to go 0-16, can they make a run at the 1976-77 expansion Buccaneers' 26-game losing streak? After going 0-14 in 1976, the Bucs started 0-12 the next season before winning their final two games. The Lions have lost 17 consecutive games and need a mere 0-10 start to cement themselves as the worst team of all time.

Giants, Dolphins quite stingy

The Giants and Dolphins committed only 13 turnovers apiece. That's an NFL record for a 16-game season, breaking the previous mark of 14 by the 1990 Giants. The 1982 Chiefs had 12 turnovers in a nine-game, strike-shortened season. That's the fewest by a team in any season. The 1943 Giants (10 games) and the 1959 Browns (12 games) also had only 14 turnovers apiece.
