Jags' Del Rio safe now, but not his boss, Harris

Jags' Del Rio safe now, but not his boss, Harris

A year after winning his first playoff game, Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio is heading toward a fourth non-playoff season in his six years in Jacksonville.

But it isn't Del Rio who is on the hot seat at 4-6 entering Sunday's game against the visiting Vikings. He was pretty much guaranteed another season or two back in April when he signed a four-year extension worth more than $20 million through 2012.

Jags owner Wayne Weaver isn't going to eat the full extension. But he might want somebody's head. And that head could be attached to James (Shack) Harris, the top decision-maker as vice president of player personnel.

Yes, the Jaguars have had a bad run of injuries, losing four offensive linemen this season, including both starting guards in the season opener. But the heat is still on Harris because an aging Jaguars roster has not been replenished with enough young talent.

In six drafts, Harris has selected just one player -- second-round pick Rashean Mathis -- who has made a Pro Bowl (one).

Del Rio, a former Vikings linebacker, knows the playoffs are a long shot now. But he said his goal -- "to win the next game" -- is the same as it was even in better times.
