Players released one day fill Vikings practice squad the next

The unit includes receiver Jaymar Johnson, the only 2008 draft pick who didn't make the 53-man roster.

The Vikings filled their eight-man practice squad Sunday all with players they released one day earlier.

The practice squad consists of offensive linemen Brian Daniels and Tim Mattran, wide receivers Jaymar Johnson and Darius Reynaud, defensive linemen Martail Burnett and Leger Douzable, cornerback Marcus Walker and running back Albert Young.

Johnson, a sixth-round pick from Jackson State, was the team's only draft pick who didn't make the 53-man roster. He had two catches for 28 yards in the preseason. He also returned six punts for a 12.0-yard average.

Reynaud is an explosive talent, but he's raw as a wide receiver after playing in West Virginia's run-dominated spread offense. Offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell said during training camp that Reynaud ran very few routes at West Virginia but became more comfortable in training camp as he got more experience. Reynaud also has a chance to be a kickoff returner in the future. He averaged 28.8 yards on kickoff returns in the preseason.

Daniels spent 14 weeks on the team's practice squad last season. He was signed to the 53-man roster for two games, but he was inactive for both.

Mattran, a Chaska native and rookie free agent from Stanford, showed some versatility in camp. A center in college, he also worked at guard and left tackle throughout the preseason.

Burnett and Douzable are a pair of undrafted rookies who could use a year on the practice squad to improve their games. Douzable worked at tackle and defensive end in camp and says he feels comfortable at either position.

The coaching staff was impressed with Young, a rookie from Iowa, but he was a long shot to make the team considering who was ahead of him. He led the team in rushing during the preseason with 127 yards on 39 carries. He gained 68 yards on 14 carries in the preseason finale at Dallas on Thursday.

Walker is an undrafted rookie and former roommate at Oklahoma of running back Adrian Peterson.
