DALLAS - A Vikings executive said Thursday that owner Zygi Wilf has turned down overtures from billionaire real estate developer Ed Roski Jr. to discuss moving the team to Los Angeles.
"They have knocked on our door, but we have declined," said Lester Bagley, Vikings vice president of public affairs and stadium development. "We have not had a meeting or discussion with Roski. All of our updates have come through the league. Our intention is to resolve the issue in Minnesota, but clearly they are out proactively seeking a team and they are the ones that listed the seven teams."
Roski's business partner, John Semcken, told the San Gabriel Valley Tribune this week that seven franchises have expressed interest in coming to Roski's stadium, but Semcken would not name them.
In April, Roske listed the Vikings -- along with the Saints, Bills, Jaguars, Chargers, Raiders and 49ers -- as one of seven teams that might move to L.A. Roski has unveiled a plan to build a stadium and entertainment complex on a 600-acre plot of land in an attempt get a team to the L.A. area.
The Vikings' quest to get a new stadium built on the current site of the Metrodome has been well-documented, as has the fact that the team's lease to play in the Dome expires after the 2011 season.
A new Vikings stadium could be built for an estimated $954 million, and Wilf has said that the ownership group would contribute $250 million but that public funding would have to be part of the equation. Plans to use part of the current Metrodome structure in a new stadium also have been discussed recently.
The Vikings have stressed that the upcoming legislative session is key to their stadium hopes. "We feel some momentum," Bagley said. "Our leadership in the state needs to step up and get engaged in a solution, but we're making some progress. Incremental progress. So, Zygi basically declined to meet [with Roski] at this time."
Wilf did not attend Thursday's game.
Semcken told the San Gabriel paper this week he has "no doubt" an NFL team will play in Los Angeles in 2009 and that it most likely will be at the Rose Bowl. That obviously wouldn't be the Vikings, given their lease situation.
However, Semcken also said there is a possibility two teams eventually could wind up playing in the $800 million stadium Roski wants to build in Industry, Calif. A potential scenario could have Roski owning one team and another serving as a tenant.
Asked about his plans for the future in July, Wilf said: "I'm not considering moving [the team], I'm not considering selling it."
Meanwhile, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, who is getting public assistance in building a $1 billion-plus stadium that will open next season in Arlington, Texas, said the supplemental- revenue sharing the Vikings get from other teams won't be around for long.
"Supplemental-revenue sharing is not for long," Jones said. "The teams that have worked and communities that have worked with them to get those additional revenues [through building new stadiums], that's where it's going to be. We have no evidence that revenue sharing is needed for competitiveness."
The Vikings generate the least revenue in the NFL from their home stadium and thus are a major recipient of supplemental-revenue sharing. "I don't know how you can compete if you don't get in a new facility," Jones said, later adding, "I can't imagine the Twin Cities being known as a low-revenue team. That would embarrass me."
A concern?Bagley was asked what it would mean to the Vikings' stadium hopes if Gov. Tim Pawlenty ends up being tabbed by John McCain to be his running mate. "We have a decent relationship with the governor, and he clearly knows the issues," Bagley said. "He knows what needs to happen to get this done. If he stays in Minnesota, if he doesn't get the nod, we think that's a good scenario for us because he's got some clout and the ability to step up and get this done. ... If he's on the ticket, that certainly prevents him from getting more engaged with us until after the election."
Still waitingVikings left tackle Bryant McKinnie could be one of several players suspended in the next 24 hours, according to the NFL Network. The network reported Thursday that a "flurry of announcements" are coming in the next 24 hours in terms of suspensions so teams can make plans for their 53-man rosters that must be established by Saturday afternoon.
Sirius NFL Radio reported this month that McKinnie, who is subject to suspension as a multiple offender of the NFL's personal conduct policy, likely would be suspended for four games.
NFL spokesman Greg Aiello replied "nothing today" in response to an e-mail Thursday asking if any decision had been made or was close in regards to McKinnie. Aiello did not respond to a return e-mail asking if that means something is coming soon from the league.
If McKinnie is suspended he will be replaced by veteran Artis Hicks, who started at left tackle Thursday against the Cowboys. The Vikings will open the season Sept. 8 at Green Bay.
